By the time Robert and Barbara moved to Chagford on the edge of Dartmoor, an Itek computerised typesetting machine had superseded the old Compugraphic – which in turn had replaced the Varitypers the Islander was composed on in the early years.

The days of laborious paste-up methods were numbered.


The reason there were so few spelling errors in the Hayling Islander . . . Barbara was chief proofreader.
